I have a 2003 Sequoia SR5. It is a 2WD with the 4.7 engine. 250K miles. I have had it for 15 years or so. Never had a problem with the starter before.

Over the last couple of days the starter has started to be real slow. Like it barely has the strength to turn the engine. And it takes a second or two before it starts. It hasn't failed to start the engine yet, but I feel like it is getting there.

The battery is only a year old. I pulled the terminals and cleaned them up. I drove down to O'reillys and they tested the battery and it was good. Their little machine said there was a problem with the starter circuit. But it did not give details.

So my initial thought is that it must be the starter. Using the toyota online parts catalog it gave me a reman starter part number of #28100-50070-84. It is 112 bucks plus the 60 dollar core.

But it occurs to me that it might be a problem with a relay or something. What is the chance of that? There are a couple of "starter relay assemblies" listed on the Toyota parts site.

Any thoughts as to how to confirm if it is the starter?

Next, I know that the starter is under the intake manifold and is in pain to replace. Is there anything in there (like hoses) that I should replace while I am in there? I replaced my coolant Ts last year, but I have not replaced any of the little hoses.

Thanks

Jared

PS: I almost asked this question in the 100 section since there are more people there, and since it is the same engine as the early 100 series. But I am not sure if it is exactly the same.
