Any of you handymen have some bright ideas on how to clean up excess silicon?

I made a bit of a mess installing a new ceramic bathroom sink, and have a wee bit too much clear silicon smeared about the outside perimeter.

Silicone is a pain at times. I've tried using all kinds of stuff but it always ends at the same thing. Like Brownbear said, razor blades - or gasket scrapers depending on the surface. There are some chemicals that can get rid of the only problem is that they also kill the surfaces of many things that it is attached to.

I would be hesitant to use acetone near the counter top, as he may have a top than can melt when using it.

Silicon melter may do the same thing to the counter. be wary.

Try your fingernails, or the wifes. Sometimes you can rub the silicon off easy enough.

Spread Same Amount Of Silicon All Over The Counter To Match The Original Spillage, Covers The Mistake And Protects Everything By Waterproofing It, Also Prevents Things From Sliding Around During For Example An Earth Quake. Mix Different Colors Of Silicon For A Funky Effect. Oh, And Then Post Pictures Of The Finished Job And Have A "completion Of Work" Party. I Hope It Helps, Good Luck!

Indeed, I would scrape before going the chemical route..likely just create more carnage. Try a plastic spatula/putty knife - maybe some minor heat -blowdryer....? and start over(a little goes a long way as you have likely found out). Silicone caulking works well, however leaves little room for error..visually.....caulking is certainly an under-rated artform....all the more appreciated when mishaps arise on a focal point. whatever the case - hope it ends well. My index finger is worn down to the knuckle from years of toil as a caulking apprentice:grinpimp:

.......you may require the methyl hydrate, WD-40 or simple solvent individually or all together in a paper bag at the ready for periods of relief from the scraping itself:doh:
