Side Trim Painting and Interior Odor questions?

Has anyone had their side trim pieces panited? The ones on our new 00 need some attention.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any ideas on how to remove odors from a vehicle? Ours has that sitting at a car lot smell.

I just had some bumper paint (plastic cover) work done yesterday and asked this exact question. I have the two tone trim and I want it all one color. He said there was no problem these days painting the plastic, but for me he said to paint the entire trim instead of just the lighter piece running down the middle. Looks like yours are all one color though so you would do that anyway.

People swear by Nature's Miracle for odor removal. I've used it on a used car purchase with so-so results.

The trim piece is two colors. The down the middle color is light champagne and the outer part is dark champagne. I do not care if the whole piece is just one color. Thanks for the info, I will stop by the paint shop and ask about pricing.

Another way to aid in odor removal is to give the interior a good washing with soap and water. I simply add a few drops of dawn to a pail of warm water and use a white clean washcloth to scrub down the interior. Obviously being carfeul to wring the rag out completely before washing areas around electrical items, and being extra careful not to get them wet. This works great for carpets seats ect.

Once the car is clean, start the motor and run it with the windows closed and the heater cranked for 1/2 hour or so. This will super heat the interior, and does a pretty good job at deodorizing in my experience.

I had my carpets steam cleaned at a detail shop once. I thought my carpets were pretty clean since i wiped them down with a damp cloth often. Boy let me tell you how nasty, disgusting and dirty that water was when it got poured out. Oh my god i almost threw up when i realized how dirty my carpets had been. Lets just say, they were a few shades of tan lighter...and it looked 100x better.

I seriously recommend getting your truck steamed at a good, reputable detail shop




oh and i forgot to mention...it got rid of this old sandwich smell that had been basicly, backed into the truck when my mom left a half eaten sandwich on the 2nd row floor for a month as the car sat in the driveway while we were in hawaii in augest in new york. 90+Degree weather...baking that smell in. It was awful.

I second on the good carpet cleaning. Mine was stinky (smoked in by one PO, gel "deodorizer" trays and sprays, and a pine tree) when I bought it--not the best decision in my life. A "Thermal Fogging" created its own obnoxious odor and brought on headaches. I used a carpet cleaner at home and it made a world of difference. It's not new car smelling, but you can smell the leather. A professional carpet steam cleaning job would likely be better. So, clean the carpets and anything else you can get to, the nooks and crannies and anything you can disassemble and wipe clean. I'm not sure how to treat the headliner, but I could use a suggestion or two on that account. If our 99's had a cabin air filter, changing that would help.

Cant you put the cabin air filter in even if it doesnt have one?

Not all LC's have the access door for the in-cabin filter. Some do, some don't. All LX's do.

Detail shops suggest fruit (oranges,Grapefruit,etc.) cut in half and left in the vehilce when the odor is real bad such as milk left in a vehicle. I tried it once and it did OK, but agree with the suggestion of carpet cleaning prior to the "fruit clean".

I pulled the plastic parts of the interior and cleaned the carpet under them. Lot's of gunk especially in the rear.

Good detail cleaning as suggested above and then use Febreze. This stuff works pretty well.

Leaving the windows down as much as you can for a while will probably do more than anything else.

Ive seen that same show, (on myth busters) & IIRC they were unsuccessful
in removing the dead pig smell from the Corvette.
