At the moment my budget doesn't include rocksliders for my 80. In the mean time I was considering taking the factory side steps off. Am I more likely to get panel damage or do those side steps offer a little protection.
Thanks

off. they offer little protection if any IMHO. Just watch your rockers in the meantime in the rocks if that is where you play.

As they are, they offer some help/comfort getting in and out of the car. It's better to step on them as you get out, so you don't wear out the side bolster of the driver's seat.
Save some money and replace them with something that offers protection and function.

keep them on so that when you do get your sliders, you can tell the wife it will be an all day affair!! if you do half the work now you won't get a full days worth of play!

I liked having them on as their incremental destruction let me know when I was getting close to damaging the rockers. Intelligent wheeling with a good spotter will keep your rockers pristine either way.
