I have three Scepter gas cans. Filled up one today, about 500 feet from my house. Put the can standing up in the back of my 80. Figured I would turn slow and it would not fall over. Of course I was stupid and it fell over. I figured no big deal. But when I got home I found that gas had leaked all over the rear. I know that I screwed the top lid tight. So I have the question, is this normal? Or did I get a dud?

I've got two surplus Scepter cans, they are beat up as hell, the tabs that capture the lids are broken, the lids will come apart when not screwed down.

Neither of them leak a drop no matter the position in the truck. I had them out in the sun the other day and they swelled up to a dangerous looking state..no leaks, I couldn't get the lids off with out some channel locks but they didn't leak...

Make sure the gaskets are in them, make really sure they are tightened down

Maybe I'll get some new ones someday..

From my experience (I have been using anywhere from 8-16 Scepter cans per run for several years now), the most important thing is to not fill these cans all the way to the top. There is an internal vent in the can. If you fill it much over the 5 gallons it is rated for the bottom of the vent is below the fluid level. As the fuel warms and expands it WILL force it's way past the seal unless you build a spanner to tighten the hell out of and are also real lucky.
