Several of you have helped me along the way but I am still quite amateurish.

My problem now is firstly that when I shift from Park into Reverse or into gear it makes quite a deliberate noise. Clunk into gear. I changed the transmission fluid not long ago. Seems like it always made some type of noise or clunk but now it seems louder and more of a clunk shaking the truck when I shift it into gear.

Secondly I had a big rattle. Could see a crack in the exhaust where it was rusting apart. Had a guy cut the broken piece out and weld a new chunk of pipe in there. Seems to have fixed a lot of the violent shaking and rattling but now I notice a vibration or rattle when I let off the accelerator. Going faster down the highway if I stay on the gas pedal it doesn't rattle but if I let off the gas then it starts to vibrate the whole truck. Any ideas?

As always any help is appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Matt

sounds like u-joints gone bad for sure. also check your driveshaft splines for excessive play. worst case scenario is the ring gear getting sloppy.

also if you have a "lunchbox" type gear locker(like a lockright or aussie locker), they tend to have a lot of play in them as the crosspin is floating between the gear drivers. When you put the tranny in gear the cross pin "catches up" and spreads the plates into each other.

So what is the difficulty for changing the U Joints? So far I've built a new bed on the truck, replaced all the brake lines, fuel lines, and flushed the power steering pump. With only this limited experience is this something I can tackle?

Thanks for the quick responses as always guys

not a job a rookie should take on, cause its easy to drop the needles out of the caps. do it if you are willing to buy 2 joints if you mess one up.

a hammer, a bench vice and snap ring pliers are a must.

google astro tools ball joint press. this tool make sit a walk in the part and is worth the investment

Best place to purchase the new U-joints? I may attempt it myself I guess because theres no better way to learn than to give it a try. Any good reading or write up on the whole process?

As always thanks for the help.

Matt
