sharpening stones... i.e. 1000 grit and up

Any wood workers in here? I'm looking into bumping up my sharpening stones into the 1000 grit and beyond zone. What is your opinion on Hard Arkansas Whet stone, Arkansas Translucent or Black novaculite.

yes and chisels. By flat blades do you mean knifes? no "pocket" knifes but scraper and plane knifes

Your flat blades perform best with a hollow grind done on them. Every when they are used upside down such as a hand plane. Traditional hones and wet stone cannot give you the hollow grind effect. The only way to properly do it is with an uber fine stone on a low RPM grinder. It is important to not heat the edge up.

I send my planer blade to a shop that puts them on a carrage and puts the hollow grind back in them. For touch-ups, is use a very fine wet stone.


Have you looked into Japanese wet stones?

on chisels I hollow grind on a old fashion hand powered grinder wheel after I flatten the flat side then flatten the angle side on a 800 grit stone.
