Hello, everyone. This my first post, so I'd like to introduce myself.

My name is Nick, and I own a 1997 Lexus LX450. It currently has 185,000 miles with all factory parts except maintenance related parts.

The last couple of months, I would at times notice a slight scraping sound when I turned right under throttle. It has just recently started making a slightly higher pitched scratching when under throttle turning right.

I stopped the vehicle and did a quick diagnostic. I power braked with the wheels straight, and nothing out of the ordinary happened. When I turned the wheel to the right and repeated the procedure, I heard and felt a scraping or slipping coming from somewhere to the right and in front of me in the drivers seat. I could feel something as it slipped, catching for a moment then slipping again. Power seemed to transfer to the ground pretty well.

If anyone has experienced this or can help me get to the root of the problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for checking this thread,

Nick

I have not experienced this exact issue but it sounds like something wrong in you Birfield joints. Typically they click when you turn instead of scrape though. The only thing else that I can think of is a brake issue. Even though you did some sort of braking thing, I would suggest complete disassembly of the front brakes to check for loose or broken parts. Certainly easier than pulling the birfs for inspection.

Sounds like a brake issue.

If not a brake issue, maybe the effects of a worn/loose wheel bearing.. or a combination of both. (I just dealt with the same symptoms...)

Stripped drive flange or a bad birf...

I put a replacement birf in on the trail (snapped one) and it would scrape as you described, but happened as soon as I put it it, tried another one and all was good...

All I could think is that you have some sort of burr or debris in the bell of the birf that's causing the noise...

Pull it apart and check out the drive side of the cage and star...

Put your hand on your tire at 11 and 1 and pull back and forth. Do you feel play? Possible loose hub bearing? As you turn to the right you put weight on that hub and could cause your caliper carrier to run on the rotor. Maybe? This happened to me wheeling over a weekend on rough trails. Heard scrapping shook wheel, loose. took off wheel and here is what I saw:

Dug in and tightened the hub and all was good minus rotor damage. Worth checking.

Thank you all for the info. This has been very helpful. I'll get her picked up this weekend and check everything out. It hasn't done it since. I don't really think its a brake thing, because during the diagnostic procedures I followed, there was no rotation, but it seems like something was spinning.

I think it may be something with how the axle splines interact with the differential. But, I am no mechanic, so after checking it out and seeing what it MAY be, I'll probably be taking it to my mechanic to be fixed.
