Scion deck in '91 4runner

The stereo on my 91 4Runner finally died and I have decided to replace it with a Scion unit.
I have used the Scion unit on both my Celica and my 80 and have been VERY happy with the results.
I pulled the old unit, unplugged the external amp, and plugged the wires from the amp into the Scion unit. The unit powers up, the power antenna works, and the radio will play, the only problem is that the front speakers volume is VERY low.
Has anyone run into this problem before? what am I missing?

My '91 celica had a stock external amp for everything, so the stock deck is worthless without it. Maybe your front channels had an amp in the Scion, so now without they are weak. That's all I can figure.

You would have to ask a Scion guy to be sure.
