I bought 2 used MFC's a while back, both were red straps so I assume gasoline. I replaced both straps and flanges not too long ago, but one of the flanges already broke. The little circular wall that the gasket sits around tore off. It looked like the gasket expanded and ripped it off, perhaps I don't have the viton gasket?

Also, the exteriors look like there is a coating that is peeling off, is there a way to fix this or prevent it? Is it even an issue?

Is there anything I need to be doing to keep these in good shape?

it is not uncommon for the ring to break off. I have about 15 (maybe 20 if I search some) mil surplus ones that are probably 20 years old or more and several have broken rings. It really does not affect anything except that the gasket is more likely to fall off when you open it.

I have been beating on these and abusing them for at least 15 years. (One was wedged against a heavily studded tires for a few days of slamming over rough trail in an M416 and it looks like a dog gnawed on it...) But they are all still perfectly functional and I expect them to be so for a few more decades.

They do not require any "maintenance". There is not a whole lot that you could even do to a chunk of plastic like this.

Mark...

I've seen heavy discoloration but not a true "peeling" of the exterior.

That ring pops off when a diesel gasket is exposed to gas. You probably don't have a viton gasket. We have those for $10.95 ea.

Mark is correct - Scepter MFCs are tough as nails.

thanks guys, ya I definitely have some discoloration and probably need Viton gaskets. I thought it was a gas can to begin with so it should have had the viton right? oh well... thanks for the help
