I used to use the first generation Iridium Sat phones in the arctic for SAR. It literally was a briefcase, but it was great to have and more reliable than trying to get a HF contact...and ending up 1,500 miles away...
Cool gizmo, glad I wasn't paying the bill. Although it was better than the 'old' satelite phones (name escapes me) - we called a mining camp to try and find an aircraft and it was something like $350!
