I do think there is some marketing BS around. There seems to be an utter lack of scientific testing.
I think mlv will be the biggest factor in the project. With the 1/8" with no CCF backing, I think you could easily double up in some of the problem areas. I won't be able to do behind the dash, or the roof, but most areas will be addressed. I don't think it will be shockingly quiet, but it will be better.
I did a test run with an RTA to do a before/after. I'm going to do an after test with CLD + ensolite, and then do a final test with CLD + ensolite + mlv. I'm about 95% done with the CLD and 50 % done with the ensolite and I've only driven the cruiser a few miles with the interior mostly taken apart, and I can tell already that the CLD is doing its job. I don't expect much if any discernable noise blocking by the CLD + ensolite, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a 3 dB decrease, which is probably somewhere near the discernable levels of human hearing at highway noise levels.
I read somewhere that the quietest cars are about 60-65 dB. I'd have to see a 10 dB drop across the spectrum. I think the 80 can get there, it's pretty quiet from the factory, but we can't just throw down 2" of material. And really to do so, I think you have to do the roof, the tranny hump, and the entire firewall.
