Any San Diegans headed up here soon or make the drive regularly? I'm looking to get some mlv from San Marcos.

I'm heading to LA tomorrow at around ten. What is mlv?

mlv = mass loaded vinyl. It's basically a vinyl mat used as a noise barrier. I'm trying to quiet the cruiser a little bit.

This is the place.

Super Soundproofing, 455 East Carmel Street, San Marcos

Let me know if it's near you and if you can pick it up. I'll have to pay for it beforehand in the morning.

It's close by, I can pick it up for you.

Nick

Be aware that it's going to be about 1 ft x 5 ft and 100 pounds.

Just an FYI, I tried to use MLV to sound deaden my cruiser, but I couldn't get it to fit nicely around the uneven surfaces in the rear cargo area, just too thick. I believe I used the 1/4" with the CCF attached. I think with MLV you have to seal every opening or you defeat it's effectiveness. You may have better luck than I, but I gave up and returned most of it.

If I were to try again to sound deaded the cruiser, I would try something like second skin.

Sound Deadening Materials for Noise Reduction | Second Skin Audio

I did use their CCF under the headliner with good results.

I also used some CLD tiles from here and strategically placed them on the side and roof sheetmetal of the rear cargo area:

Whatever you decide, good luck and let us know how it turned out.

I think it'll be easier to shape without the CCF attached. Maybe a heat gun can help with some shaping, but for the most part fitting will have to be done through cutting. So do you have an mlv layer or not?

No, I ended up removing it because I couldn't get it to form nicely, although people do it so I know it can be done with time and patience (I had some of the former but not much of the later). I did use the CCF under the headliner and the tiles on the sheetmetal.

Not sure how effective the MLF is directly attached to the body. I think based on some info on the second skin site that you may need some form of decoupler (like CCF or OCF), but this may just be marketing. Kinda makes sense though.

I do think there is some marketing BS around. There seems to be an utter lack of scientific testing.

I think mlv will be the biggest factor in the project. With the 1/8" with no CCF backing, I think you could easily double up in some of the problem areas. I won't be able to do behind the dash, or the roof, but most areas will be addressed. I don't think it will be shockingly quiet, but it will be better.

I did a test run with an RTA to do a before/after. I'm going to do an after test with CLD + ensolite, and then do a final test with CLD + ensolite + mlv. I'm about 95% done with the CLD and 50 % done with the ensolite and I've only driven the cruiser a few miles with the interior mostly taken apart, and I can tell already that the CLD is doing its job. I don't expect much if any discernable noise blocking by the CLD + ensolite, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a 3 dB decrease, which is probably somewhere near the discernable levels of human hearing at highway noise levels.

I read somewhere that the quietest cars are about 60-65 dB. I'd have to see a 10 dB drop across the spectrum. I think the 80 can get there, it's pretty quiet from the factory, but we can't just throw down 2" of material. And really to do so, I think you have to do the roof, the tranny hump, and the entire firewall.

Sounds great!

Interested to see the progress and the results. Good luck.

Thanks NIck. Got my mlv.

I'm out of raammat, and ensolite, so I'll have to hold off until I can get some in.
