I took my diesel conversion up to a cruiser guy off hiway 46 near Boerne. Trouble I had was that the brake Master Cylinder reservoir was slowly leaking fluid. Truck was repaired, although it took longer than promised, and within the first fifty miles the brakes started dragging. So much so that it was difficult to maintain speed on a slight hill or even level surface. After some delay they came out to trailer the vehicle back to the shop for a modification to the brake rod under the dash. Works fine now and the work was done at no charge.
When I picked the vehicle up it was pouring and it was parked out in the rain. While driving home the windows fogged up and so I turned the a/c on and the racket from the fan housing was unbelievable. Also the air was not coming out of the registers but out from behind the unit. I had just had about 2 hours of work done on the a/c by Vintage Aire and it was working perfectly before. My radio speakers, which were not mounted, were strewn all over the back bed. I believe it was dropped off a lift to cause these things to happen. When I got home to the garage I found that the foot wells for both driver and passenger were holding about 1/2" of water (maybe that's good - no floor leaks) and so I had to take out the carpet and spend 5 hours drying things out. That's my story. I gotta find a new cruiser mechanic. Recommendations?

Hey Dave, was this Performance Cruisers? J Russells shop? I sure hope not, I used to work there but no longer do. This doesn't sound familiar so either this was a different shop or after I left. Either way I'd like to know which shop this was.

That's the place, Cody was already gone but the web page implied that there was another experienced FJ mechanic there. Re your second point, I think you are right because I was asked to make my payment check out to some unknown entity not the name of the shop.

Can you share the link to the webpage?

Thanks Dave. Disappointing but I guess J has other priorities now.

Ok guys well like @FJ73Texas mentioned, based on my knowledge, J had told me that he was closing down the shop on two different occasions. I'm not going to say don't go there but if he was serious about keeping customers coming in the door he definitely shouldn't have told me he's closing it. Just doesn't make sense, I've been steering everyone I know away from there for that reason....good luck to you guys, wish I was there to pick up the slack. If I hear anything new or different from J I'll let you guys know.

Quick question for ya'll. Recently started looking at a used 100 series, I've never been an owner of toyotas before, however had many friends with multiple land cruisers, 4runners, and FJs. And for the most part I always hear good news. Currently I'm thinking about switching from the jeep side of the road to land cruiser. I've got a 2014 wrangler 2 door that's paid off with 32,000 miles. I'm at a bit of a loss because the towing capacity is 2,000lbs and it's a 2 door, which really sucks sometimes for obvious reason (not being able to haul a lot, I.e. Skis, other long items.) And switching to a LC has obvious attributes, #1: V8 baby!!
#2 LC reliability (if maintained properly)
The LC I'm looking at is a 2001 with 170,000 miles but it's also loaded down with ARB everything (front and rear bumper, fenders and side steps, roof racks, 2 ARB lockers not installed), and when I asked him if he ever wheeled with it or took on camping adventures, etc he said it was "just for looks." Everything cosmetic about it is fantastic, for being 15 years old, minus some electric window issue, minor deficiency. However, when driving it, starting at 50mph you get a slight vibration in the whole front end when you start touching the gas pedal. When you take your foot off or start cruising at speed it goes away, but once you touch the gas it starts again. I have some theories (bearings need repacked, uneven tread, unbalanced tires, that's about all I could think of.) he said he called the shop that replaced his rotors for him and the mechanic said there was a bushing/mount for the front axle that looked in bad shape that they didn't replace that could be causing it. But I have no idea what bushing/mount they would be talking about, because that's all the details he gave me. So I found out about Alamo Auto Doctors and I was debating whether or not to ask him if he would kindly take a look at it for me and troubleshoot some stuff on it to see what it might be. ANYWAYS! I know I said quick question, just don't get mad at me if my description was too long what are your theories? Have you seen this before? Is it worth getting looked at? Is it worth trading a jeep in for? Is Alamo Auto Doctors a reliable shop to ask for something like this?
All answers are greatly appreciated, especially if you took time to read that book.

I think so far, based on this thread and what I've heard the Alamo Auto Doctors seem to be a good honest shop.

Definitely sounds like this truck wasn't well taken care of, but if you think its a good deal then you should definitely have it looked at, and definitely get rid of the Heap.

Also post this same question, minus the Auto doctors part in the 100 series section, much more likely to get a good response out of those guys. Also all of these problems have most likely been covered in detail in that section. I have a write up in there about a window fix that may or may not be helpful.

Good luck

Really? Just FYI those are worth $800-1000 each and cost about another $1000 each to install them. I don't understand why someone would buy ARB lockers if the truck was just for looks, maybe you should peak around the bumpers and see if they have any scrapes on the bottom
It surprised me too, I'm well aware how much they are worth. But like I said everything looks good, I spent about an hour just looking at the exterior, up, down, and all around. There's no damage at least that I could see on the undercarriage, other the fact he needs to change his cv boot. Actually he needs the cv axle drop kit, he never installed that after he lifted it.

those cv's might be part of your vibration under acceleration issue, along with some worn diff bushings possibly

That's what I thought too, but the vibration only started within the past 3 months, whereas he's replaced his cv boots 6 times in the past year. I'm assuming that's because he doesn't have the drop kit and it's not aligned properly now. I'm not sure, I just wanted to get y'alls opinion on it, I'm gonna call Alamo Auto Doctor and see if he would be kind enough to look at it for me.

I took my LC in this morning to Alamo Auto Doctors for a tune up. I mentioned to Kim I had an OME kit that needed installing too and she said they could also do it. I figured kill two birds, one stone. I could knock out the OME install probably in a weekend, but I just don't have the time with family and work. I received a call later in the day with the labor estimate. I was quoted 250 parts and labor for the tune up, so i approved the work. Then I was given an estimate for the OME install to the tune of $1350.00 for labor. I said thanks, but no thanks. I'll probably use Alamo only for Toyota specific engine repairs if it's something that I prefer a specialist tackle.

On another note, anybody have experience with Land Cruiser Specilaist in Austin?

Kim and Rick are good people and did good work on my cruiser. It wasn't very clear or maybe I missed it, did they do the tune up itself? How did that come out?

I don't have any experience with Land Cruiser Specialist. There is not much to choose from in San Antonio area and you may have better luck on the facebook group if you are into facebook.

My LC is still there. Picking it up on Wednesday. I'll let y'all know how it goes. You have to admit that labor to install 4 leaf springs and 4 shocks for 1350.00 is outrageous.

What are you having done for a tune-up? Are you experiencing a specific problem, or are you just wanting to go over everything?

$1350 for labor isn't all that outrageous for an OME install. It's very labor intensive. Just removing the old springs and bushings can be a wrestling match. Still, it's better to do it yourself. Afterwards, $1350 will seem like a bargain haha...

Anyway, you're local, so if you need some help with anything... let me know.

I was having some rough idle at stop lights when the tranny was in Drive. I also wanted somebody to do a once over on the engine. My LC only has 166K miles and the previous owner took care of her.

I actually owned a 4x4 shop back in the 90s. The popular truck to lift then was the Chevy 1500 IFS pick up trucks. That kit was labor intensive. You actually had to cut off upper control arm brackets, drop the front diff, unload torsion bars and relocate the upper/lower control arms with the kit's brackets. That was like a 600-700 job. I had two Z-71s in the 90s. Before I opened my shop, I had Performance Off-Road in SA do the lift kits. They charged about 700 for labor. I just can't see 1,350.00 for the OME kit. My LC has zero rust and I even started spraying the bolts with PB Blaster last week for easy removal.

For kicks and grins, I called Land Cruiser Specialist in ATX. They quoted me 715.00 out the door for the install and could be done in one day. That's more like it. I understand Rick is a one man show and it probably would take him two days for the install. He charges 100 a hour, so I guess that's about right for his rates. I just can't pay that because he's a one man operation.

Welcome to the world of land cruisers Senorx, it seems like a small group in San Antonio but there are people who are willing to help out like @CaptClose. He guided me with my new radiator installation recently.
