That would make sense if I didnt happen to buy my car used from another american citizen.

You need to go back and tell your econ professor that you deserve an F. You cannot be serious?!!

For the sake of not making this a three page post, I will set aside the issue that buying from overseas does not harm the US economy.

When you buy a car from another party used, you are supporting the manufacture of the vehicle on several levels. On a primary level, you are demonstrating there is value in the used market for their product. By doing so, you help their sales of new products because people buy toyotas in part because of their resale value. If you nobody were to buy them used, there would be no resale value and it would harm toyota a great deal. Check one off for supporting overseas manufacturing.

On a secondary level, you buy replacement parts for your truck. That is unless you want to argue that you never need a new part for your 80?!!! So guess what, those parts are made overseas and you just supported Mr. Toyota directly again. Even if you don't buy toyota branded parts, most of thoe parts for your truck will come from Japanese manufactures that physically manufacture the parts in Japan, Taiwan, or mainland China.

This is so far from tech - but, there are 1300 employees at the factory I'm an engineer at that would be unemployeed if the plant moved to Mexico or China. I think their economy would be hurt. There is also a difference in supporting a Japanese company that pays workers a living wage, and supporting the explotation of workers in Mexico and China.
