But they are overkill for what I want to do. Looking for a similar form factor, maybe a little taller.

Any alternatives to this?

I don't know what this is...but for this price I think there's lot of improvements you could do....

That was vague, the dimensions of the box, more vertical space, maybe by like 50%.

I've seen the smittybilt version of this which does come in cheaper which is an option, but maybe a used version of that?

The only mitary trailer that comes to mind would be the welding trailer. At that point why not buy a military "flat bed"...M116A2 or3...some of the newer models I don't know the numbers off hand....and fab up what you need. You'd end up with a lot less out of pocket...and a really tough frame, far superior to Smitybuilt.
