Hello,
short of a body off restore, what are the recommendations for:

1. suface rust spots on body where paint is chipped

2. surface rust on frame and undercarriage

I know there is some rust paint on the market but havent ever used it.

Repair the body rust correctly (sheet metal/lead/filler where appropriate) and prime with epoxy primer. Topcoat. Paint the backsides of the body with silver POR15. For the frame, take off all the grime and surface rust with an angle grinder and follow the directions that will come with the 2 quarts of black POR15 you will need.

Naval Jelly

I am going through the same mess, from top to bottom. Been having pretty good luck with a die grinder with wire brush and then putting on a couple of coats of naval jelly to finish it off. Been wondering if anyone had any other suggestions other than naval jelly, it is getting kinda expensive. Also wondered if the POR15 is worth it? I have been primering and covering with a rust inhibiting paint from Wal-Mart.

If you have access to a chemical supply house, the active ingredient is all these rust removers is diluted Phosphoric acid. You can buy it by the gallon and dilute it in generic spray bottles. It goes without saying that when you use it this way, use a respirator, long sleeves, junk clothes or a Tyvek coverall, and a FULL FACE SHIELD ! I knew all those chemistry classes would be handy someday....

Eastwood has some metal etch prediluted as do most body shops.

I've also seen a product called Rust Encapsulator from Eastwood company, that says it is easier and better than POR15. They even sell a "Kit" foro $78 which also includes black top coating. Anyone have success wth this??

One of our supporters/advertisers for IH8Mud is RustBullet. I have used their product and like it a lot! (No connection, here, just like it). It sticks to most other paints, and is 1 step, comes out hard.

I second the suggestion of Rust Bullet. I used it on the entire floor of my 55 when I patched in the new metal. It goes on easy, and with 2 coats its hard as iron. I Rhinolined over it and have not had any complaints. Price wise I think it is comparable to POR, and I did 2 coats on the whole floor of the 55 with a pint, with some left to spare. Hodag

Rust Bullet Rocks

Just got done doing the underside of my fenders with this stuff and seems like a really good product. I went with it b/c of the fact that you can coat rusty and clean metal without having to sandblast a tooth into the clean metal and if you rough up any surrounding paint the Bullet will stick. Call and ask to speak to the automotive dept. specifically they'll tell you everything imaginable about the product. They even put me in contact with one of their reps to help me with spraying bedliner over their product.
