I have a 89 truck w/22re 300k+ miles that is driveing me crazy. Problem started about 6 mo. ago while on the interstate it lost power. i shifted into 4th and as long as i keep the rpms up it was ok.(over 3k) For the next week or so i only drove it to work (about 6 miles)and had no problems. then it started falling on its face at about the 3 mile mark. It will still idle but will not pull. I replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body tested and adjusted the TPS,replaced plugs. Ran better than i ever remembered for about 3 miles . Last week i tried to limp it home and it died in front of a local garage so i asked them to fix it. They replaced the fuel pump and said it was running great i picked it up and quess what, i made it about 3 miles! So what do you guys think? Where should i look next?

Yea, check for a vacuum in the tank, but I'd think when that happens would be proportional to the amount of fuel in the tank.

Check the AFM out electrically. It can be done on the truck. There should be a diagnostic procedure in the FSM for your truck.

My thought is AFM signal controls fuel amount. At first the cold start injector is providing fuel. It times out and the fuel amount goes to only what the AFM position says it should. If it is stuck, or giving a bad reading the engine is then starved of fuel.

well after testing and or replacing most everything related to fuel and ignition it turned out to be a bad injector. Oh well it runs good now and has moved on to a new home.
