Installed the new battery this morning and all appears to be well at this point.
 
FWIW: I did some electrical work on my 80 a few months back and had the same symptoms as you. I had gotten lazy with reconnecting the battery after I did my stereo. The bad connection at the terminals shorted/killed the battery so I initially though it was the alternator. After the alternator checked out and I got a new battery, I tried reconnecting the terminals as tight as I could make them with dielectric grease and the problem went away. Four months and no problems! Just make sure you can rule out bad connections before you move onto fuses, fusible links, alt etc.... A short in the engine bay can a real PITA to track down.
 
I hope the new battery did the trick.
