Got a '78 FJ with a 2F engine and pertronix electronic ignition.
About 8 months ago we replaced the head gasket. Running great. Recently it started running poorly again. It isn't purring like it normally does. I have quadruple checked the timing and idle. I pulled the vacuum advance off, clamped it and plugged the hole on the Holley Carb. it seems like the carb needs to be run way more advanced than it normally did to get it to run right. Normally it'd be around 10-12 degrees advanced. While we were playing with it tonight after putting in the new EI, it was around 22 degrees. Way too advanced.
It sounds ok under the hood, but once you get behind the doors, it sounds like a V8. really loud rumbly exhaust. I put a dollar bill up to the exhaust and didnt have any pull on the dollar bill, so i don't think that it is a burnt valve. It tore the dollar bill in half as i was holding it on both sides.
I did get some darkened hands from the exhaust while i was down there for a minute.
There is no frothing in the oil. The Antifreeze is not bright green but more of a grayish green. I am not noticing any white exhuast.
My thought is the loud exhaust or engine noise is from too rich fuel mixture, that is creating the rough idling and exhuast
Any ideas?
