there in no staining of the rocker assembly and the oil comes out honey coloured every oil change.

Pardon me, and correct me if I'm wrong, but if your motor oil is still translucent and honey colored (coloured) when you change it out, doesn't that mean you're changing it prematurely and it has plenty of life left in it?

definitely no floating contaminants in the oil if it is not black or dark brown.

Tofu, the blackness that oil goes after a while is due to contamination from the fuel you burn. given that I am combusting a gas, there is no blackness, but this doesnt mean that the oil is still good. The detergents and anti wear additives and all the other goodies that go in are only designed, from a mineral oil point of view to last around 10'000 klms max, thats why I still change mine every 7500 klms. I'm sure there are other reason for oil going black, but this is one of the main ones.

yep oil going black is from soot and other contanimants being suspended by the oil. Oil also can lose its resistance to heat shear, viscosity and other properties over time....mostly from heat but other reasons as well.

No doubt. But, I am willing to bet that as those additives deteriorate from heat, they too will at least turn the oil cloudy if not black. brand new oil is not just translucent, but transparent (though yellow). I'd expect it to become less translucent (and darker) even with NO particulates in it after some use. Got a camping stove? Take some motor oil and cook it in a pan OUTSIDE. It will turn dark brown or black with no additional additives, and it will do so at relatively low temperatures and pretty quickly.

Good theory, but you are wrong.

Sweet rig. Wish I had sliding windows. Would cut down on the drool splattered all over the back end of my rig.
Did you change your brake system? I didn't think we (60 owners) could tow anything real heavy!!!

Rogue, my truck is rated to tow 3500kg's and most days during the week, fully loaded for work I am around the 3300kg's, this includes, truck, trailer and tools, worst I have been is 3950 kg's with 700kg's of turf in the back of the trailer.

Yes it was a bit slow, but certainly not hurting it at all. Brakes are standard, though I have fitted slotted rotors on the front with metal king pads, apart from that, nothing else has been changed.

Good to know good to know. I am a learnin' and didn't know what slotted rotors were. When I replaced mine I just used standard ones. Anways just wondering if you think they make a real difference.

How many km per gallon of propane???

When loaded with the trailer and all my gear, I get 4.5 klms per liter of gas, has 70 useable liter tank and costs normally 53 to 55 cents per liter, at the moment, being Xmas and all, propane is sitting at 60 cents a liter.

As for the slotted rotors, yes they made a bit of difference, more then anything, no fading now which is sorta handy.

Zhenya, thanks for the feedback, flares are factory fitted, they have L shaped brackets that are set into the body and extend out to connect the flares.

If you go aftermarket, I used to use large headed, aviation style rivets into the lip of the guards, using 80 series flare rubber and a dab of superglue to keep it all in place while u drill and rivet.

This is a rough idea of the dash, I'll post up some more pics when the wife gets back with my truck

Nice rig and great write-up!

I'll bet that beach camping is fun!

:)

Hi Rigger,

Yeah, the beach camping is good, but it is always more work than you think. Always so much clean up when you get back, I use a high pressure fire hose through the underside of the truck, and then an oil spray with 50/50 sump oil and diesel. By the time I do that and then clean down the camping gear of all the salt spray, it eats up and least another day and a half.

Having said all that, there is no way I would change it. We have camped through some awesome spots inland and through the ranges around my home area, but nothing beats being on the beach.

Thanks Cruizer, few updates since all this, wheels blacked out, gone to 33 X12.5 Cooper STT, love them. Never used to be a Cooper fan, but got a ripping deal on these and thought I'd give them a try. The last set of Dick Cepek's I had on there did 136'000klms before the tread seperated.

Hmmm, apart from that, I hit the back of a new range rover, smashed it up pretty good, you couldn't open the rear doors on the PS, I came away with a bent bullbar and a love tap to the front DS guard. Sent it to a mate, he fixed it all and buffed the whole truck, came up awesome.

Whats the go with yoru turbo setup? Love to see more pics, especially the exhaust flange/adaptor?
