roof top tent design ideas

for a rooftop tent my wife's wants to see a vestibule design that allows her to get from the tent on the roof to the open tailgate of the truck in privacy and out of the rain. This either means a pretty big vestibule or else a design that has you exiting the tent at the rear of the truck beyond the tailgate.

she would settle for an opening in the floor of the tent that allows her to climb through the sunroof into the truck, but this would also require a detachable apron around the base of the tent that would hang down to to keep the whole roof of the truck dry. it rains here! in summer!

For me, I'd like to see a dual fold out arrangement like a pop up tent trailer with the two "wings" as beds or else a good 2 for 1 style deal on smaller tents. If I'm going to spend that kind of dough it would be nice to be able to sleep the family.

For a tent with wings I'd also like to see the middle section of the tent floor be removable so that you could use the floor or lid of a military trailer as the floor and have a mini tent trailer. This would also require a removable hang down apron around the base of the tent.

Semlin, this particular Eezi-Awn tent might be the one you want/need. Two levels, internal ladder, sleeps up to 4 adults and 2 kids with add-a-room.

This one can fit four across.

Ooooh,.....35lbs????? what the hell am I supposed to do with that? :grinpimp:

Thanks though, I remember seeing that while scouring the site but it is only 1/2 rack, really only a 1/4 rack, and they show a spare tire up there, my spare weighs more than 35lbs.
I am talking about a full rack for kayaks and fire wood and, and, and..........

EDIT: looked at the page again and they do list kayaks, must be thinking whitewater boats, my kayak weighs 43lbs and I would need at least 2 up there, and bikes and, and, and..........
But you are right, that does cover all the bases according to what I wrote in my first post, but I guess I was not specific enough.

EDITx2: So Mike, that goes back to my other post, in the other thread, when are you going to make the Maggolina with a rear door???????

EDITx3: Oooh, I know, put a heavier duty lift mechanism along the sides that can handle more of a top load and put the entrance on the back so I can get in from the bumper ladder. YEAH! thats what I want, when can I order?
P.S. I don't care what it weighs

Kevin,

You're industrious. I think you should make a double rack. Take some tubing and build onto your rack above the tent height. Maybe add fore and aft struts to help tilt it, hinge one side. Then you can tilt all the junk you toss up there to on side and crank your tent up. Might also help to load/unload your extras.

Or get/build a trailer and be done with it. Trailer might be better for offroad friendly. I'm still in shock you're getting a fridge.

Cheers,

Ken

Kev. The roof load is additive to the weight of the tent. We can only reccommend loads up to the max rated dynamic capacity of the rack and vehicle. Most vehicles (ccruisers) are rated at 165 lbs, dynamic in the US, So,,, the tent weighs in at 130 - that leaves only 35 lbs. and you're at the rated limit. The tent itself will easily take the 45 pounds of you kayak, but that puts the whole load over the limit - which I cannot reccommend ofr legal liability reasons.

Same logic applies. That photo was taken in Africa - where many vehicles are loaded heavier than is allowed by the US dynamic loading limits. We live in a suit-happy society, and lawyers are the ones writing the laws...

Might also check out the Grand Tour or Columbus Variant - both allow fitting a full gutter mount with bars for wider loads. We do not recommend that you crank the top up with a heavy load on it. This may be a limitation for you - dunno.

See relpy above.

No plans at this time. There are some limitations, but it could probably be done. One problem is that then you would have a single door tent, unless you are willing to crawl out over the windshield and hood of your truck. So there are some design limitations involved. But the customer is (almost) always right, and I will pass this idea along.

Really!?!?!
You should seriously put a "nudge,nudge,wink,wink,know-what-I-mean" Next to that 35lbs statement.
So lawyers aside, one (not you or your company) could say that the shell of one of these tents could withstand much more weight than is stated?
That is really good to know, thanks for the clarification.
If I were to call you and not record our conversation, could we discuss some real world limitations? Or are you not allowed to say any of that?
And thanks for pointing out that you can put load bars on top of some of the tents. I never noticed this photo before.
