Hello,

we are lucky new owners of a "like new" 1981 Hi-Lux. I want to rebuild it to vintage style.
The european Hi-Lux came with split rims and 7.00R16 tires, later 205R16.

But we love the solid wheels with hubcabs, and I have been lucky to find some 15" rims, though without the clips, I´m still searching for them...
The european solid rims were 5.5"x16" and came only with the J4/J5...but they are discontinued since this year.

Our rims are 5.5"x15" and therefor US version and I wondered what tire size came with them stockwise....

thanks so far...in the past I would not have called those sizes tall :hillbilly:

Joe, what size are your steel rims? Are they split rims, cannot see it.
Did you put a 10.5" tire on a 5.5" rim?? They do look nice !
But I don´t think I would get the road approval fo a 10.5" tire on a 5.5" rim in Germany.

One of the OEM steel wheels for the US 4X4 minitrucks in the 80's and 90's were these non split ring type 15X6 rims.
We have never had split ring types imported in production vehicles by Toyota to the USA that I am aware of.

I do however have a set of 16X5.50 Splits that I will be putting on my FJ60 project.

Joe,
I like your choice of truck and cruiser rims. Any suggestions on where I could find some like that for my pickup?

Sonke,
Is the white truck on the bottom yours? A"like new" '81, that's a very nice acquistion. If you can find 225's, I think that'd be the one. Otherwise, 235 75 15 is close enough.

FWIW, my 1982 Hilux LN46 came standard with 7.50x16 tyres.

Below you can see the difference between 33x10.5x15, 9R15 (30") and 7.50x16:

New tyres!

Man, Im SO jealous of you right now... Envy has no meaning when it comes to that vehicle.

If you dont mind, ill post up so people know what im talking about;

If you mean the ones on the Mini, they are the OEM wheels that came on the spare tire in the early 90's. Yes, I collected the spares from four different trucks.;)

My buddy's 86 came with them on all five tires. They still might even sell them new from toyota if you can figure out a part number.
CDan would probably surely know.

EDIT- Bret , I noticed you have a 92 PU like mine. Your spare tire rim should be the type like I am running.

Thanks mate :D

The good thing about it coming with 7.50x16 tyres as standard, is it means it left the factory with 4.88 diffs. The gearing is not too badly affected with the 33" tyres I run.

And I have some much nicer steel bars to go on, I just have to finish modifying them, as they are from a later model. I also get custom side rails and rock sliders made.

Sorry to take this thread off topic!

thanks all,

our truck has 4:88 Diffs too, is running on 31x10.5R15 in the moment. That is the reason I don´t want to get to small...
on the other hand we have to fit the tires on 5.5x15rims. 33x9.5 BFG would have the right tallness, but I doubt I will get the road approval..
I think I go for 255/75, they need a 6.5" rim that might work with the 5.5" too...

I´ll show pics when erverything is done,
for now just a short view under the bonnet...29 years old and in a better chape than my 4 year old cruiser-build ..:D
