On a related note, every book calls for 16 inch wiper blades on the back glass. 16 is way too long, or is that just me? I have the shortest blades available and they just tap the rubber glass stripping

No worries. I'm not taking anything as a smart arse answer. Hell, my Mud name even has an arse in it 
One of two things will happen if the motor isn't clocked right: The wipers won't reach the bottom of their stroke before they park, or the wipers will sweep to dead bottom and then park somewhere higher. How far they park off of dead bottom depends on how far "out of clock" the motor is mounted. It usually happens not because someone adjusted it, but because they had the whole affair apart to pull the linkage out for a repair and then didn't get it reassembled just right. In my case, the plastic bushings on the linkage failed and the wipers get sloppy. I was lucky enough to source a used linkage assembly with good bushings in it, but I remounted the motor slightly off mark.
