well, i learned to use torque wrench in the hard way.

recently while changing wheels, i broke one of the wheel lugs
on the left-rear axle. after that happened, i went to AutoZone rented a torque wrench, the rest of the lugs are safe and sound.

i was told it's ok for drive it as is for a short time as long as i don't don't do something stupid or crazy.

so, my question is, how hard is to replace it myself. any specialty tool i need to get ahead? and how much it's gonna be a fair price if i took it to a autoshop?

94 4Runner, 4wd, 5spd, bone stock, no lift no mods. it has disk break in the front, drum break in the rear.

thanks.

intresting problem, never had this happan to me before. I assume your rig is very rusty?? If this is the case your going to have fun taking the drums off. But anyways you have to take the rear brake system apart. Disconnect the hydraulic line and parking brake cable, and 4 nuts on the drum backing plate. Then the plate and axle assembly will slide out. Get it out where you can work on it, there is a pressed outer bearing and a snap ring to contend with Once your shure that everything is disconnected you have to press the axle out. this could be hard or easy...wont know until you are there.

You could wrap the splined end of shaft in rags/ duct tape and hit against cement to knock apart the axle and bearing, once axle is out, press out whats left of the stud, then press a new one in.

A fsm tells you alot and has good pics

I see your are working on a 94 4runner, dad has one just like yours, been a good truck. 186,000 and still going strong. Over the years I got sick of working hard to bust lugs loose, I made a 4ft breaker bar. Really helps with the stuck ones. Put anti-sieze on them when putting it all back together.

good luck. -nate-

nate. that is way to complicated, man.

you dont have to go through all that trouble.

all you have to do is take off the drum. grab a hammer and a punch. line up the broken stud with a spot that has the most room behind it. I like to line it up with the middle of the shoe.

beat it out.

put the new one in the hole. find a nut or somthing that has will slip over the new stud. I use a lug nut off a 1 ton truck. it has a slightly larger inside diameter.

then thread the new lug nut on.
it is easier to use an impact gun to thread it. cause it has to go in pretty far.

once it gets tight, you can use a wrench to hold the bigger lug nut in place.
then start cranking on it to snug it up all the way.
then once its in, remove the nuts and reassemble it.

i replace a few of these a week in my shop, and I'm tellin ya. its the way to do it. Nates way will work, but it is waaaaaaaay to much trouble.

BTW, are you a seal clubber or a seal shooter?

i fish saltwater all the time and i wish i could shoot them seals!! they follow the fishing boats all every time we go out fishing, chasing baits and shutting down good bites. there was one incident couple years ago, this frustrated fishing boat captain pulled out a 9mm shot a seal. the seal was ok because it was so fat, but the capt. was thrown in to slammer for 2 years.

thanks you folks who chim'd in, i still have few day till the weekend to figure out if i have the balls to do it myself, if not, i'll take it to a shop let the pros do it.

still woundering how much it'd cost ..
