I emailed that TPI 4x4 company about the rack they have on their site and here is their reply: "yes, ours is the surco rack. very light weight when not in use, but you can lay plywood in bottom and load it up for a trip. Otherwise, you do not have to carry a top-heavy roof rack when not in use."

PS CodyRX7 is the picture you posted supposed to be a Surco rack?

"...when not in use..." WTF does that mean? On the garage floor???????

I have the SURCO rack mounted on my cruiser. Let me just say it is a great deal for the price. I think I paid a little over $150 shipped for the rack. At first I mounted it to the factory roof rack, what a mistake and PITA to install/uninstall. Shortly after I upgraded to the raingutter clamps, much better IMHO.

This rack may look flimsy, but I've had plenty of camping gear along with 4'x8' sheets of plywood and it did its job. I wouldn't put a human up there, but it is fine for camping gear, christmas trees, gas cans, etc. I also got the cargo net, which is a must. I can strap anything down quickly without having to pull out a bunch of bungees. I still want to upgrade to a full length ARB or similar, but it just isn't cost effective yet.

So i was looking at some rack systems at REI this morning and chatted with a guy on their site with their on-line chatting system (very cool BTW!!!) and was curious how much weight a set of four gutter mounts and two load bars could hold. He said they were rated up to 500lbs which i find a bit hard to believe but the limiting factor is the gutters themselves 165lbs (supposedly). Now i know if you had eight gutter mounts you could hold significantly more weight...but does any one have any info on how much they have held with only two sets of gutter mounts???? thanks

Well I'm currently using the African Outback load bars (that is until I can get the full Outback roof rack) for my roof top tent and it seems to be working fine. The tent weighs about 100 lbs, then put my wife and I in the tent (300 lbs) and you are well up to 400 lbs. Of course when we are in the tent we aren't moving so I'm not sure how it would hold up to lateral forces with 400 lbs.

The only problem I see with the load bars is that I'm getting cracks in the seem weld in the gutter. Considering the seem weld is some kind of putty this isn't too surprising.

BTW the African Outback load bars are really nice and stout.

Where did you buy a rack at that price? How much more for the gutter mounts?
