Has anybody done this? I want to free up space and get rid of the heater since there is only one place in Hawaii that I would ever use it and that's on a different island. Where would the best place be to remove the hoses and heater and cap everything off? Under the hood or just at the firewall or somewhere else perhaps? Thanks

I don't have my FJ55 yet for reference, but on my Datsun (280Z) the previous owner looped the output from the block to the input on the block, so coolant still flowed but bypassed everything in the cab. That is probably the easiest approach.

That method allows coolant to bypass some of the engine block. probably better taking the nipple out of the head and putting a 1/2" NPT brass plug in it, and somehow with a heater hose cap or something, plugging the heater hose return nipple in the lower rad hose pipe...

Here's a pic of what I was thinking of doing. Basically, I'd connect A to where B is. Would this allow coolant to bypass the engine block? Otherwise, I could cap the port coming off the radiator hose like you described and then plug the port that is above the manifold?

yes. connecting a - b would allow some coolant to bypass the head(not thinking before typing earlier). when the heater valve is open, its bypassing, but with the restrictions of the heater valve itself and the heater core, which tend to reduce the amount of coolant bypassed.

I am not saying its terrible to have that, and in an emergency, it would be fine. But with a little extra work you could have it setup like a factory no heater truck. BTW, you can buy heater hose caps at the autoparts store. they will work fine on the lower rad pipe but WILL NOT LAST above the exhaust manifold.

OIC and that's why you recommended the 1/2" NPT brass plug? Time to start searching I guess.

you guys got a NAPA out there on yer island? Yeah, that 1/2 NPT plug is a standard item any plumber should have in their tool box. Is that heater hose nipple on the head a 1/2" npt thread, Brett, or will a guy have to get an adapter?

I'm with Brett, plug it don't bypass it. Besides working better you have less hoses to leak!

Thanks for all the advice! I'm certainly glad I asked now. I'll be able to find the brass plug at home depot or a local hardware store. And the radiator hose should be available at Napa or Checker.

Lil John, how would you delete your lower hose "splice"? Would you use a different hose altogether (and which one would that be) or is there a pipe available for this w/o the heater provision?

I'm sure there is a hose out there for this as FJ55's in the tropics did not have heaters from the factory. Ask Victor, "animaldevictor" here on 'mud. He has a '55 with a 2F and no heater from factory.
