It should be OK for around town riding. The 700x35 seems to have enough clearance for a fender - an important accessary for commuting bike (unless you live in desert area.) The other option you might want to consider is the disc brake - the caliper brakes are not very effective in wet. That's said, I would rather pick up a decent old steel bike from craigslist with half of the price. The major improvement for bicycle industry for the past decades is the shifters. Get a better shifting would be my only reason to get a newer bike. But fortunately, I ride fixies, and the shifting technology has not much meaning for me.

If your commute is 2 miles, hit up a few garage sales and buy an old 3 or 5 speed. Usually they have fenders, can accept a rack and the seating position is upright. When I was in college working at a bike shop I traded a saddle that cost me $15 for a perfect 1971 Schwinn Collegiate. I rode it back and forth to school ~ 5 miles each way for 3 years.

When I got out of school my brother was working in a shop so he ordered a 6 speed internal Shimano hub and some Al rims and made it into a sleeper townie bike. We also put a retro looking messenger saddle on it that's pretty comfy. The only downsides are the weight and inadequate brakes, but it's a great commute bike. I'm gonna start riding it to work again, ~ 10 miles each way.

Mine is similar to this, but no derailleur:

I rode my buddy's road bike yesterday, since I had never ridden one. I'm sure it feels natural once you get used to the position, but I much prefer the upright position. I think I'll take that Specialized for a test ride soon.

wow... what's the big gear in the back for, climbing walls?

Yep. Granny gear...

90% of the time I only use 3-4 gears....

It's pretty fast. I really like the shifting. It should get the job done.
