Wow! that is a hell of a revival. I didn't notice the dates until you mentioned it. As I was reading through I was surprised that there was no mention of the SteriPen.

SteriPen is small, lightweight, kills everything and is solar rechargeable. i keep it in the truck for that emergency situation that may never come.

I have this MSR MIOX that I have never used yet, keep just for backup, very small in size but hav eyet to read the instructions? Spent some time in Jungle and all we used was Iodine and had no problems, can also use chlorine bleach as well. I always keep Iodine tabs in my medical kit.

Awsome thread, glad it was revived I hope that people keep posting what the new and improved filters are and how they work. I personally use an MSR that I ... aquired ... while on active duty in the Corps. Actually I should say that I cary an MSR for emergency. I have used it several times to ensure it works and keep myself up to speed on it's functionality, but in the field I usually boil or chemically (iodine or bleach) purify. I choose the filter for backup since I may not have fire, or pot and chemicals run out. Hope that this helps someone.

Katadyn here. Same ceramic microfilter for 15 years.

I worked on the redesign of the MSR MIOX, Its a terrible design to be honest. It works but that doesnt mean it works well. he concept is a good one but the over all design needs to be reworked. Cascade designs should be releasing a updated version id imagine fairly soon

I like Big Berkey water filters they last forever and need little cleaning. been using one for 11 years no problems.

I've got both the berkey light and the royal berkey and I think they're both great too. Ive got about 4 years on each and haven't had to replace anything yet. Awesome bang for the buck. I take a sport berkey with me too when I go camping solo.

The General Ecology Microlite is my favorite backpacking water filter. It is small, lightweight and all the hoses pack away into itself. The great thing is it can screw right on top of a nalgene bottle. Good enough for most water sources where I go but does not protect against viruses or disease bacteria. Also, the filter is not field cleanable so you have to carry an extra cartridge.

Found it on sale real cheap.

Yep.

Although it may not be so convienient for backpacking, IMO Berkey`s filtration method is second to none. It is the ONLY purifier that I would trust for filtering large quantities of rancid, stagnant or polluted water during a long-term disaster or emergency too.

And considering that even my pets prefer the Berkey-filtered water over both tap and bottled water, it must be good ! :D

I see where you're hiding these days Sin, save me a cup of water k?

Fair enough... You get a cup of water... I get an ice cold beer

Hey give me a brake loud, I just wanted to make sure that these guys have the best water available when the Zombies come...
