Recharging Air Conditioning - R12

So the A/C in my 4runner works relatively well, but I'd like it to be colder. Is there anyone who can give me any information regarding R12 or any of the R12 substitutes? any advice is appreciated.

I had the guy over at Meineke just convert mine--cost me $200 but it gets really really cold now. It sounds like the R-12 is so expensive and hard to find you are better off without.
