Does anyone know of a company or product that produces a tire carrier and jerry can holder that fits into the receiver hitch? I'm trying to come up with a way to carry extra fuel and tire without getting a new bumper. I just bought a 96 FZJ80 and want to get into some light overland trips . Thanks

I've seen tire carrier only, but not both. Possibly combine one of them plus a bracket to hang the jerry can off the tire. Yeah, hokey, but ya asked...:hillbilly: Another option would be to use one of the many hitch platforms.

Lots of fabricators on the forum. Im sure someone could make one for you.

Did you read the OP's post? He doesn't want to buy a bumper. This might be more what he's interested in. But it was fabbed, not bought as a product.

Very true, my suggestion was something more in keeping on the standards of functionality - it would seem that having spares and jerry cans hanging off the tow hitch would add a great deal more tail-wag, and really cut into angle of departure - something already painfully deficient in an 80.

whatever the case
not bought as a product.
will be the kicker.

Here's a thought:
For your first trip or two, why not just load the spare and cans into the cargo area? As the hobby's importance grows, then you can start investing in the mods, which I will heartily advise looking into a full swingout bumper - there is no replacement for hardware designed for this application.

Good suggestion! I like my Kaymar with spare swingout. It does exactly what I need and with the spare out from under the truck, there's room and a place for an aux fuel tank. I plan to add one to mine and eliminate the need for the PITA jerry cans. And you don't lose the receiver hitch function with the Kaymar. The built in receiver is rated to tow anything the 80 will tow.

That's a great way to go, ditch those third-row seats, grab some plywood and cabinet hardware, and have a ball!

Keep us posted!

CBI Fab in Idaho Falls, ID makes a hitch mount tire/can and hi-lift product.
More well known in the Taco, 4Runner and FJ circles. Check them out.

quick question. What is the point in putting the rear tire up behind the vehicle? I understand the concept for adding a larger fuel tank or aux tank, but is there another reason?

well, many remove it from under even without adding an aux tank, cuz the spare under will
- reduce ground clearance
- get shredded on sharp rocks
- may be hard to take out altogether when you need to if you are in difficult terrain
- may be a pain to remove even in the driveway -given the hokey lift mechanism on the 80 at least- compared to one located in the back, for ease of rotation for example
- bit harder to keep properly inflated, much harder if it's upside down :)
- be limited in size as far as fit under there in some cases
- display less safari-style effect if you are trying to snag some exped-inclined gals.. (Warning: the Sierra club gals only go for Subaru-types... and who cares about those hippies anyway?) :D
- more no doubt

thank you.

I made a basket that holds the weight you are talking about. you will need a way to keep it from rocking back and fourth though.
A reservoir hitch is very sloppy fit. I use ratchet straps to keep it some what stable. Mine dose stick out past my carrier. There is a bit more tail wag but it is not bad.

Just not sure about the price. $600??? No thanks. I bought my POS Trailer for less than that.
