finally got around to rebuilding my 22re for my 81 pu. The first engine I installed was so bad it sounded like a diesel. This was a spare block and crank I had so it went off to the machine shop, bored 30 over, new toyota pistons rings and bearings. I installed an engine builder head with oversize valves and 268 cam. Transferred over the intake parts, removed the egr and air injection. I found an older used LCE header to try also. I tried my hand with the black wrinkle paint.

Very nice looking engine bay and very nice build on the motor as well.
I love your late model intake, it functions much better than the pre '88...

Really well done!

how bad was the bill for the pistons rings and bearings?

Nice. I did about the same build as you did with the OEM internals. I had 22repreformance (Putneys Machine) build my motor with all Toyota rotating assembly including the head. It's a shame all those parts you don't get to see, but the piece of mind is there for me.

Lambcrusher... A short block from Toyota is still available. It's around $2K if I remember right.

Looks great!! I love that little motor, tougher than nails. I sold my 88 4RNR last year :( I am 6'4 250lbs and folding myself in half to get in was just getting old for a 56 year old guy. That new motor should take you another 20 plus years!

Around 900 for the pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, etc, 400 for the machine work and short block assembly.
