rear shoks damaged by stones off front wheels

my rear shocks are always being damaged by stones off the front wheels. I was thinking maybe to make some kind of flap to stop the stones before. Has anyone had similar problems and with what solution. Any help/advice will be appreciated

Factory shocks have a built in rock shield. Reason #354 to use Toyota parts. They've already done the research....

Well by damaged do you mean affecting operation or looks? I'm thinking you mean the latter. Don't know how much stock crap you still have on your junk but why not some OEM front mudflaps?

I don't recall a rock shield on the shock body. Are you referring to the shield over the shaft? OME's have that as well.
 
You can always use the rubber shock boots to protect the shaft from damage, but OME makes a stone guard (mudflap) that attaches to the rear lower control arm to protect the shock from that very scenario.
 
If you have a set of factory Toyota shocks in your hand, you'll notice that the front shocks are conventional looking, but the rear shocks have a welded on shield on the forward surface of the shock tube. It's designed to protect from gravel hits at speed. I don't think the shafts are exposed at full extension, but if they are you're basically crawling at speeds where gravel protection would be a non starter.

thanks for your help guys, the reason i am so worried about my shocks is that they are PRO-FLEX rally suspension with canisters and with adjustable compression and re-bound settings and cost me $8,500
 
i will post some pics as soon as i figure out how to. BTW im from kenya and with cost of custom duties etc that is what my suspension setup cost me includng springs and bushes. Off-road she handles like a dream

As for posting them I believe there are many ways too. I use a free photobucket account (www.photobucket.com); just upload them, copy the "Direct Link" (when you roll over the picture once upload on their site). Then on the forums, use post reply (not quick reply). Their is an icon at the top towards the right for inserting pic (looks like a little mountain or something). Paste the text from the direct link into the popup you get on ih8mud. Done :) and welcome!
 
Hellow, in Spain they sell this model to protect the rear shocks. They fit in the inferior arms!!!!!!!!! I just buy one off them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An inexpensive option would be, OME stone guards, I think the part# is OME661

hey cheers CDFARMER, that is exactly what i had in mind of making but didnt figure out where to fit it. I have all necessary machinery to make it, so will straight away get down to it

Actually, OME makes two (2) kits:
- OME662 is what's shown in CDFarmer's picture (post #14). It is a flap attached to the lower control arm. It's recommended for use with LTR shocks in higher speed applications to defect smaller rocks/debris.

- OME661 is a shock mounted deflector that hugs the shock itself.

You are correct, pictured above are OME662 stone guards,
OME661 stone guards mount directly to the shock body. (pic attached)
