I think I narrowed this down. Over the years like many of you, you learn by your mistakes. When I did the SM420 conversion I think I measured incorrectly. I'm pretty sure that both shaft splines should be fully engaged in the slip joint?

With these not being fully engaged, there is a good amount of slop in between the two halves of the drive shaft.

Yeah, I’d say the shaft isn’t engaged on the splines nearly enough. No way that on SUA leaf springs, you’d get probably more than 1/2”-3/4” of shaft compression on absolute full bump. I’d still want to try and compress the suspension to be sure but I think you’re on the right track. The splines shouldn’t be loose on the slip yoke unless they are significantly worn
