not sure on the actual torque, but don't do it so tight the cork starts to squeeze out.

To drain gear oil there is no need to remove the cover plate. If you do remove the plate just gently snug. Like Ige says watch the cork and as it starts to squeeze out you're good on torque.

remember to crack the fill plug before you do anything. if you can't get the drain plug loose, just remove the lower stud and let it drain there...then you don't have to remove the whole cover.

Important to get that fill plug open before DRAINING the contents of your diffy. Sure would suck to not be able to fill it back up again.....

I have this problem with the fill plug in the rear diff on my FJ62. I need to tackle that . I did pick up the allen head plugs from Toyota so it's won't be a problem once I get it off. Do the allen head plugs work on all years of the 40/55 series? I know the hex part is a lot deeper on the early 40/55 series but still a good upgrade.

Thanks everyone.....will open the drain plug and pull one of the lower cover plate bolts to drain....appreciate all's help!!

No, no, no, open the fill plug first, then open the drain plug to drain. You shouldn't need to touch the rear cover bolts.

I think I got confused....the drain plug faces the back of the rig? I'm not sure I've found another plug in the rear diff---

Fill plug is on the cover, drain plug is underneath, kind of off to one side from center. Both are likely 24mm bolts unless they have been changed in the past.

When you refill you just fill oil into the fill plug till it starts to pour back out, about 2 1/2 quarts or so. Make sure the drain plug is in first of course :)

Thanks Charles....I will look for this drain...under there yesterday and have not noticed it:doh:

Just a side note, depending on how dirty your axle is or how often you drag it over clay it may just be really dirty. I had to dig out my drain plug the last time I redid my rear axle seal.

Exactly! Take a nail, pick or something to dig the dirt out from between the ring and the plug.
