Rear diff drain plug

Drained my rear diff today to change out the oil and saw this...

Is that a solid piece of metal? or Goo?
 
It's the magnet. It either melted or bent. There wasn't that much metal in the oil when I drained it so I have no idea why it's like this....
 
Any ideas what could of caused this before I dive into the diff?
