How many  for replacing the rear axle seal on my 92 (El Tractor 2)?:hhmm:

:banana::banana:

I'd say two, because of the need to open the rear diff, pulling the pinion shaft and removing the C clips.

Consider replacing the seal on the other side as well, since you've done the hard work already.

If it has a lot of miles, consider replacing the bearings as well.

Sure, if I go for all that trouble, I'll replace both.:steer:

Here's where the seal goes:D

I'm replacing mine tomorrow. The FSM states 'apply MP grease to the bearing' but this seemed counter intuitive to me since gear oil lubes the bearing. Wouldn't the MP grease & gear oil mixture cause one or both to break down?

CDrew did you grease the bearing?

If I replace the bearing I put a bit of grease on it to protect it until the gear lube has a chance to circulate. It will quickly clean the grease out once you start to drive. It's just a bit of insurance against a dry start. You could probably use gear oil directly in the bearing too.

Thanks!

I like the paint on the brake shoes as well!

I wish Toyota would had put those full floaters on ALL their cruisers!

All you have to do is buy one. They bolt right in.

Probably will be cheaper and easier go and see tomorrow a 1996 with lockers, OME suspension for about 6 grand, and sell mine. Then that would be "El tractor Tres"

Wrong, no, bad. Go buy another 60!!!!

E-lockers are sweet though.

I know, those 60 seems to be bullet proof! I go out withem all the time and they don't break! If I dont't get the 96, I'll go for the full floater axle. That would be a very low priority

Did the seal job today, wasn't hard but when you are working alone, outside, and is very hot, things seem to be harder. The part that first worried me was when I was removing the axle, the small gears fell off and I was not aware that was going to happen. Three hours later after I figured how these gears were supposed to go, I got the whole job completed, including relocating the differential breather hose. I forgot to adjust the rear brakes (replaced shoes at the same time.:whoops:

i am doing the same to my fj80 this weekend. having trouble getting to that pin behind the differential cover... am i forced to remove the spider gears to get to that pin??

You shouldn't have to. Rotate the assembly until you see a small bolt that looks like it is bolted thru the pin, that is the set screw that holds the pin in, unbolt that and the pin should push out with minimal resistance.
