My 91 FJ80 has completely died out just now. I was leaving my apartment complex and it died once, but cranked back up just fine, I ran it for a bit like that and it was working ok but just as I was about to pull out it dies again and will not turn over. It cranks fine just isnt turning over. Yesterday I put on a snorkel but I checked all my work and everything looks like it did before so im thinking it is something else. After trying to turn it over at one point I heard a buzz from the fuel tank area however could not reproduce it later.

edit: the CEL isnt lighting up at all either so cant use that to narrow the problem down

Thanks for any help

Sounds like AFM to me. Make sure the plug is installed properly and make good connections. Is you reinstall the spring clip that holds the AFM plug in place? It's gotta be there to allow it to make proper contact with the pins in the AFM.

If the cel isn't lot, it's either your AFM or the EFI relay. My guess would be loose AFM connection unless, while installing the snorkel, you removed the no-no screws on the AFM plug body. If so, you may have destroyed the connections in the AFM and will require a replacement or repair. Hopefully it's a loose connection not damage.

Well the plug to the AFM was loose but I tightened that down and it started up ran fine for a minute then died again. I removed both those screws jsut now to take a look at the connections and everything still looked attached. All hoses to and from the AFM are fine, no cracks or anything.

How easy is it to damage that plug to the AFM?

when the truck did start up the CEL showed up giving me a code 8: Intake Air Temperature Sensor signal.

AFAIK, the intermittent nature of this problem suggests a loose connection, either at a connector, at a ground, or inside a component. IF you loosened the "no-no" screws previously mentioned, then this is most likely your problem (ask me how I know...) If not, I would look for loose connections at the AFM, in the ignition system, at the ground terminals, or anything else that was touched during the snork install.

The no-start troubleshooting guide in the FAQ is very helpful.

Edit: it is VERY EASY to damage that plug. I did this to my truck when I first got it, just being a bonehead trying to change the air filter. The truck ran great for 60k before the VAF finally cratered. It passed the bench test, but was shorting internally.

Damn so its something I will most likely need to replace then. I suppose that answers my problem thanks everyone for the thoughts and quick responses, feel free to chime in if you think of something else.

Not necessarily. This is merely my experience as it pertains to my vehicle.
I found loads of excellent info on this specific issue, most of it written for your 3FE, on this forum.
I find the search function much more useful on my laptop browser than on my phone.
The best way to test the AFM is to find a friend with a similar cruiser willing to swap parts. Beer helps.
Good luck

Well I was just fiddling around with it and I see absolutely nothing broken inside. My FSM doesn't really explain how to put it back together it just says to do it. As I was trying to adjust the position of the plug i could get the engine to turn over run and die so that's progress at least. Does anyone know if there is a trick to putting the plug back in?

I diddnt see anything about testing the AFM in my FSM. Could you tell me what the test is or where it is in the FSM?

On my '93 this is called the VAF and the test is in the Diagnostics section of the SFI chapter. But you have the '91. If you can't find it in your FSM, it is not hard to locate via 'Mud search.

Thanks everyone for the help it was the plug that was the issue after reading more on the forums I decided to break the seal and check it out. There are three pins that broke off and needed to be soldered back on.

So for anyone searching in the future this is how you fix it when you break the no no screws.

First you break the seal and open the cover up, this is what you will see. The broken pins are on the bottom row and very hard to see from this picture.

Here you see what needs to be soldered a little better, when you get it open you will be able to tell better.

Here everything is soldered up and reconnected.

Make sure this bar is on the correct side, your truck will not run if this cannot move.

Another picture of how it should be.

Seal it up and you are good to go.

Thanks for all the quick responses everyone and hopefully this can help someone else out in the future so they dont have to blow a few hundred dollars on accidentally undoing some screws.

I just did the exact same thing today. No matter how this turns out, you all made me feel much better knowing I'm not the only one! :censor:
