Raventai,

Thanks for all the work you did on the temp gauge mod. I did it on my 80 this weekend and now I have a gauge that actually works and moves around. The problem is that now it appears I need a new fan clutch. I'm getting the feeling the real cost of this mod is going to be several hundred dollars.

I got to really test out mine out this weekend with a loaded down rig and long hill climb at 3000 rpm for about 4 or 5 minutes. Gauge moved about 2 to 3 needle widths above middle, so I feel pretty good about that.

It got me wondering under what conditions the fan clutch actually kicks in. I would think mostly only in hot, stop and go conditions, not conditions where the engine is turning 3000 rpm's, because the fan already turning at a high rate.

LOL, that is a side effect,

One thing to note is that the gauge mod is quite sensitive. Some would say too sensitive. , it seams a lot of us get into the 200-208 range, weather that is warmer than design I do not know but it is common.

what conditions set each vehicle up to get hot seams to vary I have a fresh fan clutch but it still gets up in temp at idle with the AC on, for me short term fix has been bumping into neutral when idling over 30 seconds or so is expected, raising the RPM in neutral seams to help out a lot also.

For others high speed freeway travel sets it off, but for me this is when the needle parks itself in the middle no matter what.

Others high loads like towing a trailer up a pass. have not done this myself (not many passes in GA) so cannot say what mine would do.

Mine is getting up into the 200-205 range at slow speeds and idling in 70f weather. It drops as soon as I start moving and flooring it on a climb on the freeway for 1+ minutes produces no temp rise so far. To me that signals a weak fan clutch but a good radiator. I'm waiting to hear back from the parts God.

Cary, I'm in Sac. I have an aftermarket temp gauge and mine hovers between 180-185 around town, A/C on. This is with a new fan clutch and top notch cooling system. Pulling up 17 into Santa Cruz fully loaded, A/C on last week I hit 200.
