Searched and didn't find anything on this (Disclaimer).

I just had my head gasket and cylinder head replaced on my 97 FZJ80. It seems that ever since this was done, I now have some rattling coming from the passenger's side behind the ifrewall. It ususally happens when the car is first started up and then at speed. I've gotten underneath and attempted to move the exhaust system and it seems fine. What could they have forgotten to tighten ? Sometimes it seems as though the noise stops when the A/C is turned off too.

What could this be ??

Without knowing any specifics, I would suspect something on the exhaust. Whenever you start the engine it shakes quite a bit and that shaking can move the exhaust more than you might think. Even though the exhaust feels tight when the engine is off doesn't mean it can't move and hit something when you start it. My guess is a exhaust pipe would be laying against something (maybe a bracket it should be clamped to), so it rattles when you start it, then at speed it's just slightly toughing something so you get some vibration transfered there.

Look around the passenger side of the engine while someone keeps starting and shutting it off, see if you can see anything moving and what it's hitting on..much easier to track a rattle down that happens at starting than something that happens only at speed.

Good Luck..

Re: rattling

Matt,
I'd check two places given the work you had done. First would be the two heat shields on the exhaust manifold. These are held on by 3 small bolts that secure them to the cast iron of the exhaust manifold and it isn't unheard of for someone to break off the head of one of those, then just secure it on with the remaining bolts - and give you a rattle.

The second place is in the diagram. There is a small rubber exhaust mount with two studs going up to the frame mount and two going down to the exhaust mount. The small nuts used to secure this usually permanently meld with the studs and break off. Again, this might be something someone considered irrelevant or just forgot.

Last option would be the catalytic converter shields but seems like you would have caught that in your first inspection.

Good luck tracking it down and hope this helps.

I agree with others but since you mention you just had the headgasket fixed, make sure they put the bracket that is on the head on the passanger side of the veichle (used for removing the engine as a place to attach the hoist to) back on the correct way. My mechanic had it on backwards and it will touch the firewall and make LOTS of noise in the cab of the truck.

Just a thought but I agree proably the exhaust.

Thanks

Andrew

Look at the passanger side of the engine in the very back. The bracket is bolted to the head and is basically a piece of metal with a whole in it. There is one on the front also (I beleive on the other side). Both would be used together to hoist the engine out. If it is put on backwards, it can hit the firewall and make lots of noise. Mine actually made the sound of the #6 cylinder echo into the cab.

Look closely and it should be obvious.

Thanks

Andrew

Toyota of Manhatten Beach did the HG and cylinder heads for about $3,000.00

Check that coolant !!! I'd like to have a larger coolant reservoir after that issue. I keep two gallons in the back of the cruier now at all times.

I'll look for those brackets. Thanks to all for all of the help

Wow x's 2! I would have to find a reliable non-Toyota mechanic to do it - $3000 is much $$$$$!
