Hello,
I've noticed lots of Ham radio threads... Which is great.

But I wanted to also give some info I have gathered up in Smithers. You can have a commercial radio bands 136 to 174 mhz in your vehicle and operate it without a ham licence.... BUT it needs to be locked on certain channels. And your vehicle has to be registered. The form is at most Communications retailers.

I have a Vertex gazillion channel VHF. I paid about 600 for it used. I have over 300 channels programmed, so I have coverage of all local logging roads. All nicely put into community tabs in the radio. So if I want Smithers area I can tune in that area and scroll thru the channels.

This works pretty good for most roads in BC. So if I knew I was going on a coastal cruiser ride, I would bring my radio in to my local shop and have it programmed and locked.

So there is options to carry a radio with out a licence. BUT I will be getting a licence so I can free up programming. Private channels I can not listen to, as my radio shop will not program them.

If I wrong with my info please let me know. Every second truck in Smithers has a VHF. Everyone is on LAD channels.

For registering a radio in a truck.... go here. But as government sites go they are really complex.

I was talking with my radio tech today, I asked about Ham licences so that I could program my radio and he said still that would not help. The Ham licence limits you too low in the mhz band for use with commercial radios. Which is what every logging road uses.

The HF frequency isn't good for short distance communications. I have used HF quite a bit around aircraft. Also the commercial band is about 136 to 174 mhz. So all above the privileges of a basic or advanced licence.

So you can get a radio for using on logging roads right now with out a licence. But your vehicle needs a mobile land licence.
