questions about 96-99 taco (hub lockers, tires, racks)

currently driving a 97 2wd tacoma, and i wanna upgrade to a 4wd.
First off, i'm wondering what the biggest tires i can fit on it without lifting it are?
And second...is there a method to which trucks had manual lockers and which had the ADD? i'm looking for manual

Are you considering IFS or solid axle?

If you are considering IFS, do your existing wheels have 5 or 6 lugnuts?

i'm not planning on converting, but rather selling mine now and buying one used. i'm just looking around now, and trying to figure out a way of knowing what a trucks got without going out to see every one. whatever i end up buying, i doubt i'll lift right away if at all, but if i was to i would go IFS probably. any serious wheelin will be done in the 80 series me and my dad will (hopefully) be lifting soon.

i'm also looking at putting some racks on it...one so i can carry a kayak on top and possibly one to move the spare out from under the truck...any links to projects like this online? luckily i've got a welding buddy...

My bad... I saw upgrade and assumed convert.

As for the Manual v ADD, I really don't know when they switched.

Good luck!

thanks! just checked out your rig, love it. also i've heard that the v6 gets almost exactly the same gas mileage as the 4cyl? is this true?

Don't know about the gas mileage, my 4 cylinder averages about 20MPG and is a lower maintenance engine than the 6 (chain vs. belt.) Both engines are very serviceable and neither should present many problems. The largest tires that can be reasonably mounted on a stock truck are likely 31". Hope that helps a little bit.

Brad

32" if you take off the mud flaps. Depends on the width a bit so 265/75/16. Caster setting actually affects rubbing.
