Ok Gang need some info here will the fj60 thirds and the 40 thirds swap out or can i take the disk brake assembly from a 60 and put it on my 40 axles without to much BS also are the 40 axles stronger than the mini truck axles and what gear ratios is an 82 pickup 4x4 4 banger ?

Yes, 60 and 40 thirds are interchangeable.

You can take the discs from a 60 and bolt it onto a 40 axle. You have to swap everything from the trunion bearings out, including the birfield. Some of the older 40 axles have smaller opening on the axle end, so you have to grind the ball a little so that the birf will slide into the housing.

40 and 60 axles by themselves are only marginally stronger. The axle shafts are the same strength, the pinion (if it is fine spline like the 60 and later 40) is the same diameter as a mini pinion, the birfs are the same (late 40, 60 and mini). The LC ring gear is bigger, so there is some strength advantage there.

The 82 should be 4.10. I would look on 4x4wire.com in the toyota section, it will confirm that. There were some 4.30 ratios in a certain year minis and I can't remember whether it is the 81 or 82 year model.

What are you planning?

wel not real sure yet but lookin like we gonna take my other set of 40 axles and put them under Johns truck but would like to use the 60 disc's on the 40 axles so he has front disc at least.BTW we have a new front diff in Johns truck for now so he will be able to wheel his own rig

If you end up with a front 60 axle or housing that you want to part with please shoot me a PM.

Just remember on the rear axle, it is offset on the LC and centered on the minis. Also, the IFS rear axle is 58" wide and will keep the rear tires from rubbing on the frame/bed. The 55" wide LC 40 axle will have the tires rubbing. I don't think I would use the 40 rear axle. Not worth the loss of width, centered rear axle, and marginal strength gain.
