Is an H42 out of a FJ60 the same H42 out of a late 70's FJ40 except for top cover, shift lever and output splines? I also think the earlier ones had a plate on the back between the tranny and transfer case.

Does anyone know of any other differences?

Thanks,

James

James, for any given year, the H42 from a FJ40 is interchangeable w/ FJ60, except for the top cover. A 1978 H42 is not interchangeable w/ a 1983 because of the output spline difference. also, the transmission case is different on 1981-later, with the transmission mount machined on the bottom of the transmission case. Ratios are all the same. It is possible to put a 1981 tranny & t-case into a 1978 truck. It is not possible to put a 1978 tranny&t-case into a 81-later FJ60 because there is no provision for the transmission mount on the bottom of the transmission case.

The trannies used w/ 1980-earlier one piece t-case have a bearing retainer/ adapter plate that bolts to the tranny, and t-case bolts to it an through it.

The 1981-later trannies w/ split case do not use the separate bearing retainer plate. That function is built into the front face of the split T-case. The back of the tranny case is still the same.
