First, does anyone know the purpose of the "divots" machined into the face of the drum shaft clutch spacers?

Second, before I dismantled my winch I had to move the clutch engagement handle far beyond the hole that the "winch clutch lever shift lock". I have not found excessive wear on any parts. How can I take up the slop?
