So I'm looking to replace the rusty but trusty HJ60 with a 87 BJ71. I got the guy to show me how the winch worked but I hear rythmic clanking sound from the winch as it turns on each revolution. I put my hand on the pto final drive gear case and feel the tapping in the case on each revolution, almost like there is a bent shaft. The winch did retrieve in 1st gear but sounded noisy. Having no experice with these so I thought i would ask if this loud noise is usual from a pto. Arent they genrally smooth? The truck only has 125000km on it a little bit of surface rust, but just wondering about the winch. Thanks in advance

they are normally smooth...can whine a bit under load or running fast. Could be a bent shaft or dodgy universal...The shear pin location could be loose also.
Only one way to find out is to watch it all spinning or tear it down and inspect.

As long as you dont find your PTO idler gear like this one you will be happy.

yikes. i worry that maybe the problem. does the idler gear get actuated by the worm gear? possibly the idler is missing a tooth.

Could be many things - check U joints (replace with Precision 395), check pillow block bearings, check splines for excessive wobble - if all OK then the problem likely in the PTO case, assuaming your worm gear is OK.
