PTO Winch - Friction Brake?

The friction brake on my PTO winch doesn't seem to do much of anything to keep the drum from spinning. The internal spring puts a little tension on the brake pad but not much. Anyhow, it seems like the only way to disassemble the handle and get at the internal spring is to drive a pin out from the drum side which would mean taking the whole damn winch off and apart.

Did these things work when new or should I just add a big ass spring on the outside?
 
how does the brake work on the PTO, I have one now but its not hooked up. My brake looks like it could use some love as well.

I guess I don't get it, if the brake is on the winch, you are in the cab running the PTO........how to you use the brake? AH....................I might get it......the spring will keep presure on the pad agaist the drum....so the brake just works automaticly when the drum is let out?

OK.....I don't get it. Please explain :)

also what happens then the shear pin brakes? does the drum lock up or?
 
The brake pad is only used to drag on the drum and slow it down when it is disengaged from the drive (freespooling). If you look at where it is, maybe it will make more sense. When you grab the handle and disengage the drum from the dog on the shaft you'll see that the brake pad is now resting on the drum. The pad is supposed to apply enough friction to keep the wire from turning into a rat's nest as you feed it out. This is the only thing it's supposed to do, it is not a brake to hold a load or anything like that.

The winch is a worm gear drive so the load on the cable is not reversible to the driveshaft. :confused: In other words, if you were to be lifting something and break a shear pin, the load will hold (in theory) and wouldn't drop wildly to the ground. Of course nobody is lifting with these things, right? ;)

speaking of the worm drive, I would CAREFULLY check the brass worm gear for wear if your PTO winch is anything more than a decoration. I have seen one or two winches that were heavily used and had significant wear on the brass gear. If the teeth fail due to wear or any other reason, it could be a hell of a mess when the winch freespools and releases the load quickly. Take the 6 bolt cover on the drivers side off and check the teeth for wear.
 
good idea. If I pop the cover off is anything gonna come flying out at me?

best drain out the gear oil (if any) first, John.

That's not the way that I see it. If the shear pin breaks I wouldn't be standing behind the load!

btw Does anyone know where to get a 60 series shear pin in North America? I'd like to have a few spares and the local dealer says that the part number I have doesn't work (probably because it's not offical Toyota USA/Canada stuff).
 
I had a 10 penny nail stuck in for a shear pin on the winch that came with my '45....SOR sells them, and probably you can get them from Dan the Parts Nerd at American Toyota.
