Hi guys-
Replacing the PS pump and the back bolt head hits the exhaust manifold before it disengages the pump threads to release it. Short of cutting the head off with a hacksaw and replacing it with a slightly shorter bolt, is there some other slick method I might try to get the bolt out? I can't believe the PO would have removed the exhaust manifold to replace the pump so it may be the original at 200k.

Thanks-
Jeff

Thanks guys. I already ground down my 14mm craftsman box wrench to half its thickness just to get it over the bolt head just because of the tight clearance. I was hoping that I wasn't missing something really simple like removing the entire mounting bracket instead. Great idea of replacing the bolt from the front. I've got a custom wrench now that I can cinch the nut on the backside with.

err, you gotta take the bracket off to get that pump off...

in my truck, anyhow.

This is a pita bolt. I think originally, that bolt is supposed to be a few threads shorter than the rest. you will definately need to remove the heat shield, if you still have it. You can try removing the end exhaust manifold bolt. That front piece on the exhaust manifold is a slip fit into the center section and you might be able to push it together to get a little more clearance.

I was able to get mine off with a lot of patience. With the bolt completely loose, I grabbed the bolt with some locking needle nose pliers and wiggled the bolt as I yanked on the power steering pump. at some point proper alignment was achieved and the pump slipped out. but it took a while and I didn't think it was going to work.

The next time I removed my intake manifold, I tool that bolt and ground off a few threads--but not many. Once the manifold is installed the bolt is still trapped, but at least it fully retracts away from the pump bracket.

Yes, just remove the whole braket/pump assy from the engine. Separate pump from bracket on the bench, clean & paint bracket, clean shmegma off engine block & AIR pump, then re-assembly is the reverse.
