Unfortunately, the time has come for me to sell my 2-owner 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300d. (300D Turbo, 300TD, called different things depending on what country and who you are talking to) The first owner owned this car from new until 2024. He was an older gentleman and took very good care of this car until it came into my ownership because he was no longer able to drive it.
Over the past few years, this car has been gone through mechanically, and many parts have been replaced. This might be the most mechanically sound car from the 1980s that I have ever sat in. Mechanically, this car is 100%.
The interior of this car is the nicest example of a 300d that I have seen. The dashboard has 0 cracks in it, and if you know anything about these cars, you know how rare that is. The speakers are not the original ones and sound very good. Unfortunately, the radio head unit was replaced, but it was replaced in the 90s, and fortunately, it is very German and very period correct. None of the leather on the seats has torn, and once again, for those who are familiar with 42-year-old cars know how extraordinary that is.
This car is equipped with power windows and cruise control. The windows work, and the cruise control is 100% functional. This might be the only unrestored 300d with working cruise control.
All of the original literature that came with the car is still tucked away in the glovebox and has been preserved.
If you have ever driven or heard of the diesel W123 chassis, you know just how slow they are. This is, hands down, the slowest accelerating car that I have ever driven. The 5-cylinder turbo diesel motor and 4-speed transmission are tuned for smoothness and unfortunately, in the 80s, that meant removing all the performance. That being said, once you hit 40 mph, this car is actually quite zippy from the torque the turbo diesel motor makes. This car will happily cruise highway speeds without complaining, and since I have owned it, I have been getting around 30mpg every time I fill up.
This car has been pretty well maintained when it comes to Utah road salt and the winters here. The bottom had been sprayed off frequently after snow, and other than the 2 rust spots that I will mention later, the underside of this car is clean.
Now, after all the praise that I have given this car, it is 42 years old at the end of the day, and there are some gremlins that this car will come with, those are:
• Hood, Roof, and Trunk panels are sun-faded, as well as the dealer-added pinstripes on the side
• The air conditioner does not work; I suspect it has to do with a vacuum line
• 2 of the tires have worn funny; this was due to an alignment issue early on in my ownership of the car. The issue has since been solved, but 2 of the tires will need to be replaced before the other 2
• Leaks a little bit of oil, not from anywhere that is concerning, but what 42-year-old car doesn't leak oil?
• The cable to pull back the sunroof broke, but the motor and the vacuum still work. The cable kit is only 20$ to fix the sunroof.
• Tachometer only works when it is warmer than 75º outside
• Odometer does not work, says 244,344 miles, but I think the real number is around 260,000; that doesn't matter, though, because the 5 cylinder in this car is known to be the most reliable engine ever put in a car. Look at it this way, you are driving around for free pretty much.
• There are 2 rust spots on the car, typical spots for the 300d, and both of those spots have been captured in the photos.
Those are all the problems that come with this car, but being a 42-year-old Mercedes, I wouldn't call them problems but rather quirks. These problems are very typical for a 300d and have been documented thousands of times, with many forums and videos dedicated to resolving these problems.
This has been an amazing car, and I have had tons of fun with it during my ownership. I am having to let it go because I have an older Land Cruiser, and insuring 2 classic cars for a guy in his 20s is not fun for my wallet. I feel that my Mercedes 300d Turbo Diesel itch has been scratched, and now it is time to pass this car on to someone who will appreciate it.

Beautiful Mercedes!

If this was a manual, I would probably consider a trade. I think someone will appreciate how your 300 already is, though.

Great cars! We had one as a wagon. Well known as one of the best engineered platforms ever built! GLWS!
