We have an opportunity to pick up an '88 RJ70LV here in Guatemala for under $1000. It's the carburated 22R gas engine like in the pickups. It looks decent at first glance but there are a few things missing that I think could be found here locally given time. The biggest issue is a lack of title. I'll be checking on what it takes to get a title on Monday.

When was the 22R engine last carburated in Canada/USA?

This would be my sons truck that he'd buy with his own funds and then when he graduates down here in two years and returns to Canada he'd bring back with him and import it to Canada.

Thoughts and ideas??

97' I thought but Im sure someone else will know for sure.

The old 22R has stood the test of time and I think the only bad point is the carb starves when something inside gets stuck.
You could maybe add the TBI as an upgrade;)
Good luck with it

I believe in the States 1985 was the last year of the carburated 22R.
In 1985 you could get the 22R or the 22R-e.
In 86 I think they were all 22R-e fuel injected 4 Cylinder motors.

We had an 85 4Runner over in Hawaii that had the 22R-E.

Thanks Jim, that helps in knowing that the drivetrain probably has parts support in Canada.

Anybody care to weigh in on the price?

my friend has a 91 runner that is a 22-re. SO in Canada I know for sure that year had it.

Sounds like a good buy. That's the engine all the guys with the 2lte blowing up should install. I like the 22re or variants.
Lots of aftermartket support, decent on fuel and good power. I know a lot of guys bought the LJ78 for the diesel, but the 22r engine is a great engine.

In the US, the 22r was standard equip till 88. 22RE (EFI) was an option from 85-88, when IT became standard equip in 88, with the 3VZFE V6 taking over as the optional motor.

The 22RTE (turbo EFI) was available from 85 to 88.

If you get it, and decide to swap out the 22R, I'm thinking the 2.7 3RZFE from a Tacoma would make a nice swap. Using Marlins new bellhousing, the 3RZ would bolt to your existing R151 tranny.
