There should be a tag on the AC pump that tells what type of refrigerant it has, along with clutch voltage etc.

Nearly everything is in Japanese, I'll take a look again, but I'm allmost certain it doesn't say.

Anyone else have any ideas, maybe Wayne since he seems to tune these rigs.
 
I'm sure it is R-12, Japan didn't standardize the A/C to 134a until 1995. Before 1993 I have never seen a Japanese car with 134a and I have seen alot of cars in my shop for A/C. Easy way to tell if it is R-12 it has the smaller screw on servicing ports. The 134a has quick disconnect ports that look like air hose connections. The R-12 system can retrofitted to 134a but is not quite as cold as R-12.
